Print-Ready PDFs with DocRaptor: Professional Output for Regulated Industries
Generating a PDF for screen is easy. Generating a PDF for print — one that a commercial printer will accept and reproduce accurately — is a different problem. Color spaces, compliance profiles, font embedding, bleed and trim marks — these requirements exist because the physical printing process is far less forgiving than a browser.
DesignTech AI now generates print-ready PDFs via DocRaptor.
What DocRaptor Enables
DocRaptor is a professional PDF generation service built on PrinceXML, the most capable HTML-to-PDF engine available. The key capabilities it unlocks:
PDF/A Compliance — PDF/A is an ISO-standardized PDF format designed for long-term archiving and regulated document distribution. Financial services, healthcare, legal, and government sectors often require PDF/A for document submission. DesignTech AI can now generate PDF/A-1b, PDF/A-2a, PDF/A-2b, and PDF/A-3b variants on demand.
PDF/X for Print — PDF/X is the prepress standard required by most commercial printers and print-on-demand services. DocRaptor generates PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-3 compliant files, which means your document will print exactly as designed.
CMYK Color Profiles — Screen content uses RGB. Print uses CMYK. Converting between them naively produces unpredictable results when printed. DocRaptor handles proper CMYK conversion with ICC profiles, so your brand colors translate faithfully from screen to substrate.
CSS Paged Media — CSS Paged Media is the W3C specification for styling print output: page sizes, margins, headers and footers, page breaks, running headers, and facing page layouts. PrinceXML has full CSS Paged Media support, which means complex multi-page documents — annual reports, technical documentation, product catalogs — render correctly.
Large Documents — DocRaptor handles async generation for documents that take longer to render (up to 600 seconds), which is essential for catalogs, reports, and proposals with hundreds of pages.
How It Integrates with Brand Kit
When generating a PDF, DesignTech AI pulls your brand's color palette from the Brand Kit and converts it to CMYK values using the ICC profile configured for your organization. This ensures that the navy blue in your brand guidelines is the same navy blue your printer produces.
Font embedding is handled automatically. All fonts used in generated documents are embedded in the PDF file, so the document renders correctly regardless of what's installed on the recipient's or printer's system.
Practical Use Cases
Financial Services — Pitch books, fund factsheets, and regulatory filings that must conform to PDF/A for compliance submission.
Healthcare — Patient materials, clinical documentation, and regulatory submissions requiring archival-grade PDFs.
Publishing — Magazines, catalogs, and book content where CMYK and print trim accuracy matter.
Enterprise Sales — Proposals, case studies, and capability decks that will be professionally printed for client presentations.
Legal — Contracts, briefs, and compliance documents requiring long-term archival format.
Setting It Up
DocRaptor integration is configured in Connected Apps. Add your DocRaptor API key, and print-ready generation becomes available as an output option for any HTML-based skill template.
Skills configured with print output can specify:
- Output format (PDF/A variant or PDF/X)
- Page size and orientation
- Margin and bleed settings
- ICC profile for CMYK conversion
For most use cases, the defaults pulled from your Brand Kit are sufficient. Advanced print specifications can be configured at the template level for specialized output requirements.
Quality Assurance
Generated PDFs are automatically validated against the specified compliance profile before delivery. If a PDF fails validation (missing embedded fonts, out-of-gamut colors, missing metadata fields), the execution returns an error with details rather than delivering a non-compliant file.
This prevents compliance issues from reaching the printing stage, where corrections are expensive and time-sensitive.
